It all began in October of 1978. In a worship service held in a modest house, a core of “pioneers” banded themselves into an organized local body of Christ and named it Caloocan Christian Church – “A small church with a Big Heart for GOD.”
The house church could only accommodate regular Sunday worshippers so that other services and special activities had to be held elsewhere. Members made their private homes available for fellowship meetings while neighboring Christian churches, school buildings and mission facilities became venues for special occasions.
From this lowly but glorious beginning, the church grew tremendously in both number and spirit. Three places of worship had been outgrown before it settled down to a 542 square meter lot it acquired (its present site) in 1982. A two-storey, multi-purpose 200-seat wooden building was constructed at the far end of the lot. Two years later, the edifice was found inadequate to comfortably accommodate the growing membership.
Thus, in October of 1984, on the occasion of the Church’s 6th anniversary, the body felt they were led by the Lord to once again ‘arise and build’ a bigger, better, and this time a permanent chapel in the vacant portion of the lot. Impossible dream? But nothing, with God’s direction, had stopped the Church from taking this venture of faith of such magnitude. They saw this gigantic project too big to miss.
And so it was that in October 1985 the CCC family experienced a “double celebration” – the 7th anniversary of the Church and the dedication to the Lord of the much-prayed-for chapel – a monument of God’s faithfulness and a testimony to the faith of God’s people.
The CCC family continued to grow in quality and quantity. Church leaders were trained. The youth was revitalized, trained and challenged to get involved in various ministries. Sunday School classes were upgraded. The multi-purpose structure became the Christian Education Building. Membership classes were conducted regularly. Missions and Evangelism continued to be given emphasis. Home Bible Study Centers were opened. The Zambales mission outreaches were regularly supported, visited and encouraged.
In June 1991, the vision to establish a pre-school became a reality. The Caloocan Christian Church Learning Center was dedicated to the service of the Lord. Classrooms were constructed for Nursery, Kinder and Pre-school pupils. Teachers and staff personnel were hired and a Principal designated.
It was also at this time that Mt. Pinatubo erupted and displaced our Zambales missionaries and their flock. The consequence was so devastating there was no way of returning to their villages and making a living from the destruction. They were later relocated to different resettlement areas and by God’s grace got adjusted to the new environment sooner than expected. Yes, they were displaced but not misplaced. They were right where God wanted them to be. The five missionary couples grew to 18 missionary couples and two single ones reaching out to a wider mission field that now includes a part of Bataan. God is really amazing!
But conflicts can befall even in the assembly of God-fearing people. Eleven months later during a heated congregational meeting, issues that could not be resolved brought division in the house. The Board of Trustees resigned en banc! Two groups decided to chart their own destiny. But God, in His infinite wisdom, grouped the CCC family in such a way that the two groups that left became the nuclei of two local churches that later diversified into other ministries. The group that was left behind struggled to rise up from the “ruins.” Others who did not join any of the three groups but decided to attend other churches eventually became leaders, preachers and even pastors where the Lord led them. It is amazing that the Christian love that bound the CCC family remained strong and immovable. On special occasions and fellowships, the “scattered flock” came together, shared with one another and happily called them instant reunions. God always has a purpose in everything – but who can fathom His infinite wisdom?
From the “ruins” of this learning experience, the church grew steadfastly. They continued to express their love of God in trying situations. And our great God always made His presence felt as He worked in the lives of His people. Great Is His Faithfulness!
And as we look forward to more fruitful years to come under God’s provision, protection and promotion, Caloocan Christian Church will live to appreciate its body-life camaraderie, cherish its history, treasure its identity, uphold its testimony, and as one dynamic organism, chart its own destiny. May God find us faithful as we proclaim His faithfulness. To Him be the glory and honor and praise forever!
